Nato wasn’t defense coalition even in the Cold War. You just need to look at calendar to see which bloc was formed as a response to which. Also, NATO country was attacked literally one single time and NATO didn’t even intervened because they have a special exception in the rules so they can freely wage colonial wars. I won’t even mention how many times NATO countries were agressors compared to that one single time.
