Agreed. I think using the masculine as the default should be fine if everyone agrees that it applies to all genders in this context. I wouldn’t even mind if the feminine was used for this instead. It’s just for the sake of legibility.

I would argue that it osn’t newspeak when the term is objectively descriptive and is just used to avoid saying (and thus proliferating) an individual’s name.

Agreed, I am not claiming that this change would in any way stop autocrats. But I do think it would have a subconscious psychological impact when commoners like us talk about politics.
