  • What is it with people here thinking that earning a wage is slavery? That requires either a complete lack of understanding what slavery or just some serious impressive mental gymnastics.

I associate corrupt authoritarianism with communism because it’s an inevitable outcome. Communism only works of you remove individual freedoms and force people into it. This, by design, requires a dictatorship. Dictatorships foster corruption because you can’t have transparency.

  • No I said what my average experience here in this sub was, relating to the original post. Yeah, most people here quite literally simply don’t want to work, and somehow think that goods and resources come into existence magically or something. So yes, I call them lazy because that’s what they are.

If you want to have a serious discussion about work situations needing to improve I’m all for it. I just don’t want to have another discussion about “my vegetable garden will sustain me, the entire world should do this”

Also, I quite literally did not understand what you wrote as you listed childcare and hobbies

  • I don’t know other IDE’s very well, haven’t used others in years.

Amongst things… PHPstorm allows me to rename a method and it will automatically rename that method in any extended class, interface, etc, and any call to they method too. It usually, mostly, does a reasonable job at it, but sometimes it forks up big time.

I guess I am willing to try eclipse again, see how well that goes.

I’m sorry, I don’t understand. You listed child care, and hobbies. What havr those to do with work?

The other direction being this antiwork thing which is highly unrealistic and in reality just a bunch of lazy guys complain about having to actually do work, like everyone else, thinking that somehow magically the world would be so much better if everyone dat on their fat ass

  • I get your point. I also get that the average noob is now starting to hear about Linux. I also get that the average noob had been complaining about the windows bullshit, thinking that it’s a computer thing that is normal, is now learning that actually, no, it’s not normal.

I’ve seen many a noob dipping their toes into Linux, and quite a few staying. Call it Dad’s trying to fix the computer after he fixed the toaster, but still.

Also companies are more and more interested. Once people use Linux on their company computer and see how easy it is to get the same nice system on their own computer, you will see them switch

My point is: you need a critical mass and I feel (I might be wrong) that clinic is approaching that. 10 years ago many noobs didn’t even know what a Linux is, today they actually do and they keep hearing there are no ads, it’s free it’s safer, it’s easier, less bullshit… They’ll come.

  • Hey míster, 1999 called, they want their Linux comment back.

Linux is easier to install than Windows. On windows 11 vs. Ubuntu Linux:

Literally last time I installed both, Linux was a 25 minute task that includes download time. Windows was a week long hell that in total cost me over 7 hours, required me to make bios changes, run VMs to try and burn the damn image and a whole lot more headaches

Out of the box, Linux will detect and support most hardware quite well. Again, can’t say the same for windows where a lot of manual labour was involved.

On how it works? Even my mother can sit down and use it out of the box, talking from experience.

Is Linux perfect? By no means it is. Are there spill specialty devices out there that require extra work or may not even be supported? I’m sure there are. Does the same go for Windows? You bet your ass.

Does Linux have a better user experience than Windows? You bet your ass. No ads, no marketing BS, no money begging, no tricks, no clutter, no OS stuffed with sponsored crap, it. Just. Works.

  • Because getting food from your own garden is cute but absurdly unsustainable for 8 billion people in this world?

Like it or not, factories and large companies are the reason that 8 billion people can love on this planet. Granted, said companies can be quite abusive and a lot of rules are still in place allowing this abuse, but we’re getting better at it, ymmv per country. Either way, abuse is not as bad today as it was 100 years ago or even 50 years ago. If automation and AI continue their current course, we’ll all be working 2-3 day weeks soon as well.

Either way, I get the point, I’m just saying don’t swing too far in the other direction either.
