  • Why? Does 95% of digital advertisement even serve a single valuable purpose?

I get that websites need funding and that legitimate business require some way communicate their services exist. We need to solve the problem for the former and create specialized accessible safe spaces for the later.

When is the last time anyone here saw an ad for a local business, when is the last time anyone recall willfully clicking one? Was there actually anything useful there?

From what i recall ads almost always are one of the following:

    • sex, barely legal drugs and predatory video games. (Lumped together to make a bad pun)

    • real product/fake price: oh this item isnt in stock plz look at catalog

    • politics, buy our guide to get rich, actual illegal scam operation.

None of them are honest or respectful to the customer. People aren’t prey, stop baiting.

Admittedly, for me this is personal. Autism means i experience the extra noise as painful. Plastering it on useful websites feels like a hostile attack to keep me out and unwelcome. I downright refuse to look at watch nor will i support them through ad free subscriptions to the point of it having become a digital disability.

But come on, can we smart online people really not figure out something else that isn’t based on literal brainwashing.

  • It has existed for a while but has been getting more mainstream ik recent years.

Its a good term because it comes from the community itself rather then being a medical label by a doctor so its inclusive to people with or without diagnosis.

It also covers many more neurological differences that are not, yet frequently overlap with, autism. adhd, dyslexia,… You dont need to self identify as sick or disabled it often just feels better for me.

  • “don’t enter any commands you see online without looking at it first. You can’t trust everyone”

This has somewhat become a staple idea of mine. People trust others online way too easily. Ai isn’t all that different in this but its more obvious to us that there is something to be scared about the uncanny valley.

What it tends to come down to is capacity for personal critical thinking which we should aim to foster more in future generations.

Maybe i assume too much that programmer-minded people naturally come with such skills for troubleshooting and will be capable of responsible ai interactions?

  • The link between cannabis and schizophrenia is also supper dubious at best.

Its for the most part based on statistics that a large number of people who go to the ER and are there diagnosed with psychosis have used cannabis.

Schizophrenia is a genetic condition characterized by frequent psychosis. And a significant number of this group experiments with cannabis before onset of schizophrenic symptoms, which often only arise in late puberty/ young-adult age.

There are theories that cannabis may trigger schizophrenia in people that have the genetic sensibility to it. Assuming it would otherwise have stayed dorment (for longer)

But 3 pieces of information are ignored.

First people diagnosed with schizophrenia that did not use cannabis before onset of symptoms share the exact same statistically tendency to start using cannabis later in life as the group that did before, leading to theories of self medication and there is proof of anti-psychotic properties of some cannabinoids.

20% of the general population smokes (nicotine), 80% of the schizophrenic population smokes, its such a well known fact that its a common movie trope. Yet not a single theory about how nicotine effects psychosis exist. Because remember only rare people with a genetic sensibility can develop psychosis and psychotic paranoia is a fear tactic

Psychosis and schizophrenia are not well understood in general, there part of the neurodivergent spectrum which is a modern idea in its scientific infancy, More and more we do understand that the main driver of psychosis (and every person can be pushed into experiencing a psychosis) is extreme levels stress.

I know some other things extreme is related with:

    • addiction to substance abuse of any kind, every time you crave = stress

    • the troubles a (young) person may have that leads to them frequently using drugs to begin with.

The statistics do make sense but relation simply isn’t causation and its shameful that politicians can just misinterpret science like this.

  • To be fair this tweet doesn’t say anything about training data but simply that it theoretically can use present day data if it looks it up online.

For gpt4 i think its was initially trained up to 2021 but it has gotten updates where data up to december 2023 was used in training. It “knows” this data and does not need to look ut up.

Whether they managed to further train the initial gpt4 model to do so or added something they trained separately is probably a trade secret.

  • Not sure of this is still true, it often feels like edge is the main spyware feature of windowless in general, integrated into windows search.

Everytime you search for an app or file it doubles as a edge search query to present in the results. You can try disable all the spyware on windows if you want. Edge still stores it in the microsoft cloud so you can sync.

Copilot is a golden ticket for them now. Its literally an edge based application.
