I would be less against flatpaks if you could do everything with it. But it seems to try to slow multiple problems at the same time and failing.
I think it is time to actually come up with a better design solution.
Well, as long as you have prepared a backup system then you should be fine. Like dual booting into Linux
The idea with flatpaks are flawed by design as everything can’t be there. I want to install the latest version of these there: kde Plasma, wayland, Nvidia drivers, and the Linux kernel. It will never be available there. Better to go back to the drawing board on how to fix this in a good way.
He is just afraid of learning new things. Best way here is to show him how it works. Learning.
Yes, with Windows it is a fight about disabling all the new stuff they come up with. Here, you must use OneDrive if you save a file. Here, lots of ads in the start menu, nothing is installed. Or here, please try copilot+ or bing. Do you want to set bing as your startup page? If you say no, we will ask you again… A new windows update? Lets ask everything again.
Picasa because it had worked fine. And the replacement, Google photos, is not an option with storing everything in the cloud. Both Darktable and Digikam looks too advance. I think Gwenview will be a good fit. Will try later when she has the time to test. Just viewing the images in the folder, that is all that is needed.
It would be a good idea with the Office 365 but we don’t want things in the Cloud. If the PWA could run offline it would be a different story.
There is a learning curve for old people. It takes time. So dual boot is a must until then.
Microsoft does not follow its own standard for doc and docx. Any other software tries to follow the standard, thus you can get different view of the document depending on what editor you use.
Picasa I think is easier to replace. Just need to relearn. Leaning towards Gwenview. VM is not an option, too complicated and slow for her. Picasa has been depricated for a long time now so it is time to move on.
I have been dual booting for some time now. Come back to windows 10 for gaming. But then I suddenly realize that the blizzard games that I play can run on Linux, and even from the same folder with the NTFS partition. I was stunned. No notable performance difference either.
I recently shows my mum that have an old Core 2 Duo that it can run Linux Mint. She said it works, and the computer shutdowns directly when I tell it to do. No more updating windows to wait for before unplugging the power cable. Still have to dual boot Windows 10 for Microsoft Office Word document compatibility and Google Picasa.
She also just have bought a new computer with Windows 11, could barely make it through the installation. So many questions and configuration needed to get rid of ads and popups in Edge. Need to evaluation Mint more before I try to dual boot it on this machine as well.
I actually like that app. But can’t use it reliable now since they gave it up. Welcome EMClient and Thunderbird.
They don’t know. For computers it is easy, but for Phones - this is really hard. But be glad that the masses don’t know about it. They actually watch all ads and bring in the money, so us educated can leech with no ads.
This is a setting in Excel. But Cloud is the default option.
Just call it Script.
EU should force a choice for all new PC. What OS do you want to run? Windows, Linux or Android? Then you would be able to see real competition in the OS market.
Maybe something like the raspberry pi OS chooser. In the best of worlds you have everything installed and just choose in the boot menu what to run.
It was not an option one week ago when i tested it. Maybe because I was in WiFi range and Microsoft assumed you have to know the password to at least one of them to pass the wifi screen. No skip button. But could create a new account as unverified using gmail address.
Hexchat and pidgin. What to do now when they are not supported on wayland?
Well, it is the many against the few rich. It is everyones planet.
I actually dont understand why we not do something drastic. I mean like ban cars and planes. We can still get around. Just not at the same speed at the moment. Someone will come up with a better idea then gas cars.
We also need to think about computers. Why throw them away? We could just make better software and keep the devices for a very, very long time. Heck, very bad computer could land on the moon…
Kde because i want customization and standard is also ok. I tried gnome but did not like that extensions were required for tray icons etc. Gnome is otherwise good.
I3 and hyperland i dont get. Some windows should not be very large no matter how much free screen space you have. Example is calculator or old school chat applications like pidgin. No native standard set of applications. Everything must manually be added and custom, like everything in kde settings(sound output, network settings, screen size etc). Waiting for when applications can recommend its screen size to the window manager.
