Perhaps the server config started defaulting to XFCE. Maybe what happened is entire XFCE DE got marked as a dependency, installed during update, and then when some config defaulting to XFCE thanks to this became valid, you ended up here.

If it’s VNC, what do you have in ~/.vnc/xstartup? Maybe a line like xfce4-session &?

You think that’s bad until a HP laptop deletes your boot entries because you’ve used an external drive to boot up once and it doesn’t provide you a way to add them back from within UEFI settings so you just have to manually navigate to the correct .efi file and then add the boot entries back from within OS but oh wait you need to come back to UEFI to put them into correct order.

Also applicable if you forgot to unlock DriveLock before going into UEFI.

Because for me Windows was not easier to use.

I only got my first proper computer in 2020, and comparing Windows 10 with Linux Mint 20, I found the latter much simpler to use not having used either one prior. Just having to bounce between Control Panel and new Settings, plus a lot of tutorials shown magic with registries…
Also, I had a lot of problems with uninstallers failing or not removing programs completely, and getting permissions to remove files directly was also pain in the ass, even as “Administrator”. That often resulted in me booting up live Linux DVD to remove crap programs from Windows.

I gave it a try, but I didn’t like it. Perhaps I’d like MacOS though. It seems similar enough. But Windows just feels like 2 decades of hotfixes glued together.

However, some older programs may actually behave better in Wine than say on Windows 11.

Yup. Boot time and loading of system apps. 8.1 was basically instant while XP and Mint had slight delay. Not a big deal though, just something interesting for being Windows. After all, it was made for tablets.

I also put Windows 11 on it despite being unsupported. That was slower, but still OK-ish with SSD. Definitely nowhere near Linux Mint though. The background processes were just killing the CPU. Thankfully, thanks to being made in 2007 the cooler could easily take 100% CPU usage. However, it would hover around just 6% with network disconnected. Hmmm…
The CPU was Core 2 Duo T7500 upgraded from T7100. I got it on AliExpress for €1. It seems some people were using them for… making keychains? Anyway, they were sold as functional.

I wish laptop CPUs and GPUs were still upgradable. The GPU was GeForce 8600M.

Due to the optimizations Windows 8.1 is my favorite Windows version. When I compared it to Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon on my old (now dead) laptop, it performed slightly faster. It also somehow beat Windows XP which is what that thing was made for. Although a part of that could have been that half of the drivers only worked in XP, so it had more to load.

Maybe if they properly called it Windows 9, it would have caught on. It was definitely different enough from 8.
